Why Santa Fe for Your Engagement Session

Santa Fe is one of the most photogenic places in North America. The light here is different—clean, clear, and sculpted by altitude and adobe. The landscapes feel endless. The city has character without trying. An engagement session in Santa Fe isn't just about taking photos; it's about spending time in a place that matters, with a photographer who knows it.

I've photographed couples on every Santa Fe street, in every canyon, at every season. I know when the light hits Canyon Road, how the sky reads in October, where the cottonwoods go gold, and which spot on the Plaza gives you the best backdrop without the tourists. That knowledge means your session moves fast and captures real moments instead of posed ones.

Best Engagement Session Locations in Santa Fe

• Canyon Road — Adobe galleries, organic light filtering through trees, and genuine Santa Fe atmosphere. Most couples start here. Morning or late afternoon are ideal.
• The Plaza — Historic heart of Santa Fe. Classic architecture and city character. The gazebo and surrounding portales work well. Best early morning before crowds.
• La Fonda on the Plaza Rooftop — City views, flags, and a sense of elevation. Dramatic in any light. Interior light is mixed, so sunset works best.
• Tent Rocks National Monument — 30 minutes northeast. Volcanic landscape, canyon trails, impossible colors. Dramatic and remote. A full-day session is ideal here.
• Diablo Canyon — Closer than Ghost Ranch, similar geology. Red rock walls, water, light that changes every 15 minutes. Hiking is part of the experience.
• Nambe Falls — High-altitude canyon setting with a waterfall. Cooler in summer. Hiking involved, but the payoff is isolation and landscape drama.
• Bishop's Lodge Grounds — Open acreage, cottonwoods, views of the Sangre de Cristo. You don't need to be staying there. Ask about access; I know the staff.
• Ghost Ranch (Abiquiú) — An hour north. O'Keeffe's territory. Red cliffs, impossible colors, total landscape immersion. Best for couples who want full-day exploration.
• Museum Hill — City views, cultural backdrop, dramatic sky. Less common than the Plaza, more sophisticated energy.

What to Expect from Your Session

A standard engagement session is 45 minutes. We start in one location, explore the light and energy there, and then either stay or move to a second spot. If you want outfit changes, we build time for that—nothing feels rushed. I work fast and documentary, which means I'm watching for real moments: the way you look at each other when you're not performing for the camera, laughter when something catches you off guard, the gesture of a hand or the turn of a head.

You'll get digital files, typically within a week. I deliver them in a cloud link, and they're all edited—no guesswork on color or exposure. The files are high-resolution and suitable for prints, social media, or the large canvas you might want to make.

If you want video as well, we can add that to the same session. Casey Addason Photography covers both photo and video, and combining them usually costs less than booking them separately.

Engagement Sessions Prepare You for Your Wedding

Many couples book an engagement session a few months before their wedding. It serves two purposes: you get beautiful photos for your engagement announcement or invitations, and you both get comfortable with my style and pace. You learn how I work, what direction feels natural, and how documentary photography differs from staged portraits. By the time your wedding day arrives, you're not wondering who this person with a camera is—you already know how to work together.

If you're booking a wedding with me, an engagement session is highly recommended for exactly this reason. It's an investment in feeling confident on your wedding day.

How to Book an Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are available as an add-on to wedding coverage, or as a standalone portrait experience for couples who want professional photos without the full wedding package. Either way, the session runs the same: 45 minutes, one or two locations, full photo and video, edited files delivered within a week.

If you're booking a wedding, adding an engagement session is a straightforward conversation — just mention it when you reach out. If you're coming in standalone, tell me where you want to shoot and what you're going for, and we'll figure out the rest together.

I book 3–6 months in advance for preferred seasons. Fall (September–October) has the most dramatic light and color. Spring and summer book quickly. Winter can be beautiful after fresh snow. Reach out early if you have a specific timeframe in mind.

Photo and Video Together

Casey Addason Photography covers both photo and video. If you're engaging a videographer separately and also hiring me for photos, you're coordinating two vendors and two creative visions. A hybrid package combines cinematic video with documentary photography in one coordinated session—typically at a lower combined cost than booking them separately and with far more visual coherence in the final product.
