Why the Venue Photographer Matters at El Monte Sagrado

El Monte Sagrado is one of the most spiritually grounded wedding venues in New Mexico — it's also one of the hardest to photograph well. The Sacred Circle garden ceremony site is designed around the feeling of the space, not around any single sight line. The cottonwood grove changes character by the hour. The Taos Mountain backdrop is visible from some locations but blocked from others. And the property's quiet, intentional energy means the wrong photographer can feel like an intrusion.

I've shot at El Monte Sagrado before and made the drive up from Santa Fe many times. I know which corners of the Sacred Circle hold the light at different times of day. I know how to work the cottonwood grove portraits so the couple shows up against the grove rather than getting lost in it. I know how to move through the property quietly — I've been told more than once that clients forgot I was there until they saw the photos. That's the right posture for El Monte Sagrado.

The Venue: El Monte Sagrado

El Monte Sagrado is a 30-acre Heritage Hotels resort tucked into the foothills outside Taos, about 1.5 hours north of Santa Fe. The property was built around the idea of "sacred ground" — the owners treated the land itself as the design brief, and the result is a venue that feels genuinely rooted in place rather than imposed on it. Cottonwoods, ponds, hand-built gardens, and views of Taos Mountain on clear days.

For weddings, El Monte Sagrado offers multiple ceremony sites (the Sacred Circle is the signature), indoor reception spaces in the main lodge, garden courtyards, and guest accommodations across casitas spread around the property. The venue handles weddings from 20 guests (intimate elopements) through 150+ (full wedding weekends). Corporate retreats and creative workshops are also common.

Light and Seasonal Photography Strategy

Fall (September–October): The cottonwoods turn gold and yellow, making the grove one of the most photographed locations in northern New Mexico. Light is warm and crisp. The Sacred Circle ceremonies in the late afternoon catch filtered light through the trees. This is peak season for a reason. Plan 12+ months in advance.

Spring (April–May): Wildflowers bloom across the Sacred Circle and the gardens. Light is soft. The cottonwoods leaf out and create a canopy of green. Weather can still be cool in the mornings; plan for guest comfort. Great for outdoor portraits.

Summer (June–August): Lush green cottonwoods, afternoon monsoon clouds, warm evening light. The Sacred Circle holds ceremonies comfortably in the late afternoon or early evening. Midday portraits need careful shading; I work the shadows on the east side of the grove.

Winter (November–February): Taos winters are snowy and cold. Snow on the cottonwood branches and Taos Mountain is stunning for portraits but requires serious guest-comfort planning. Intimate winter weddings are magical; large winter weddings are logistically complex.

"Casey photographed us under the cottonwoods and somehow got us in the same frame as the mountains. The whole day felt protected."

Hiring a Photographer Who Knows El Monte Sagrado

Ramping up at a new venue on a wedding day is stressful. You're managing vendors, logistics, and a hundred moving pieces. If your photographer is learning the property for the first time, that's one more thing you're managing implicitly — guiding them to locations, waiting while they scope light, watching them figure out vendor coordination.

A photographer who knows the property walks in ready. I know which locations work for what time of day. I can coordinate directly with the venue events team because we've worked together before. I don't need to scout — I can focus entirely on you and what's happening. That simplicity matters on your wedding day.

Photo and Video — One Vendor

Casey Addason Photography covers both photo and video. You don't need to coordinate two separate vendors, two separate timelines, or two separate personalities on your wedding day. Hybrid packages combine cinematic film with documentary photography — typically at a lower combined cost than booking them separately and with a much more coherent final product.

My Approach

Documentary means I'm watching what's actually happening — not staging moments, not herding people into positions, not pausing the day to manufacture shots. I'm a musician and performer as well as a photographer, which means I understand timing, reading a room, and knowing when to stay quiet and when to move. Clients describe me as easy-going, invisible when I need to be, and very fast with a camera when something real happens.

The result is a gallery that looks like your wedding, not a template of one.

Pricing and Booking

Wedding photography packages start at $3,500 for full-day coverage. Elopement photography starts at $1,500. Corporate events and retreat documentation are quoted based on scope. Contact me with your date and vision for a specific quote.

I'm booking 2026 and 2027. El Monte Sagrado peak-season dates book 6–18 months in advance. If you're within 6 months of your date, reach out immediately — I do occasionally have openings.

LGBTQ+ Friendly

Yes. I photograph all couples, all ceremonies, all configurations — without qualification. El Monte Sagrado is a welcoming venue for all celebrations.

Is El Monte Sagrado in Santa Fe or Taos?

Taos — about 1.5 hours north of Santa Fe. If you're planning from out of state, factor the drive into your timeline. I'm Santa Fe-based but travel up regularly and know the route well, including which restaurants are open late if your reception runs long.

What's the Sacred Circle and why is it popular?

The Sacred Circle is El Monte Sagrado's signature ceremony site — a circular garden with water features, sculpture, and cottonwoods forming a natural ring. It's designed around the feeling of the space rather than a single photogenic sight line, which means it photographs uniquely depending on time of day and season.

Can you photograph a Taos elopement at El Monte Sagrado?

Yes. Elopement packages at El Monte Sagrado are a beautiful option — the Sacred Circle works for 2-person ceremonies, and the cottonwood grove gives you stunning couple portraits without needing a crowd. Elopement photography starts at $1,500.

Do you know the El Monte Sagrado staff?

Yes. I've photographed events at El Monte Sagrado and coordinated with their events team before. Heritage Hotels runs the property and their events staff is experienced and accommodating. Working with a photographer who knows the venue means smoother day-of logistics.
